Petition to Continue Funding For UIC Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center
Petition summary and background:
Governor Quinn’s proposed 2010/2011 fiscal budget eliminates total funding to the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Furthermore, the Governor proposes to sell the state’s annual tobacco settlement, funds intended for smoking cessation and health programs, and use the revenue to help balance the State of Illinois budget deficit. A percentage of these tobacco settlement funds are what primarily funds the Sickle Cell Center. This will result in the loss of a vital program for those who suffer from sickle cell disease. The loss of this program will result in the avoidable deaths of many patients who will be unable to receive expert medical care! There is no other program in the country with acute care and clinic in the same hospital space that offers the services that are offered at the Sickle Cell Center.Action petitioned for:
We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge our legislatures to act now to continue funding to the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at the University of Illinois, Chicago, reinstate the $600,000 that was removed from last fiscal year’s budget, and to leave the tobacco settlement fund for its intended use support health programs such as the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at the University of Illinois, Chicago. We urge you to join us as we demand to be given every consideration!*** You will receive a confirmation email to verify your submission, please respond to the link provided to verify your participation and validate your electronic signature ***

Please keep this clinic openAlicia L. Johnson,
I am the mother of a 20 year old daughter who has sickle cell disease. She receives her medical care at UIC. Due to transferring my daughter from another hospital to UIC was the best decision I have ever made. Because UIC is the medical center where new treatments are both discovered and adminstered. My daughters health has improved so much since we started coming to UIC when my child was 11 years old. The physicians, social workers, nurses all work with the families to ensure that we are educated & well cared for. It would be a travesty for funding to be cut from this great program. Please help save more families, like mine, who have endured so much in dealing with this horrible illness. Thank you, Alicia L. Johnson.Sherry Mack,

Me and my two sisters suffer from Sickle Cell Anemia. If Governor Quinn ever saw someone in a full Sickle Cell Crisis he would understand the importance of the center.Laura zajkowski,
Please continue funding for the this vitally important center. The Sickle Cell Patients need your help.Cynthia Hardy,
As a active member of the board of The Have a Heart For Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation for many years and as a person dedicated to supporting people and their families suffering from the disease; it is my sincere hope that the Governor will reinstate the funding needed to keep the Sickle Cell Center at UIC open. This is the only comprehensive sickle cell center in the state and it is a much needed facility for so many people afflicted with sickle cell anemia.Nicole Artz,

As a young person in New York living with this disease I understand how important this clinic is. This clinic needs to stay open and continue it's much needed work.Andriana Collins-Brockman,
As the daughter of Linda Collins, founder of The Have a Heart for Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation, I have seen how Sickle Cell Anemia affects so many lives. The UIC Comprehensive Center is an incredible step forward in bettering the lives of those affected. The one of a kind facility shows how dedicated Illinois is in bettering the lives of all citizens because this is a disease that in some way affects everyone. Funding for the center is vital and a loss of that funding would be a disservice to many.Shanta Harrington,

Please reinstate the fund to the Comprehensive
Sickle Cell Center at UIC. The Center and it's patients are counting on our support. Too many patients will be turned away and suffer needlessly if the Center has to close or cut back on their services.

I am appauled at the idea of cutting something so life saving, and vital to so many. It is bad enough that there isn't enough quality health services for the poor, young and elderly but to defund the Sickle Cell Center to balance the budget is unthinkable. To think you got my vote! I won't make that mistake again if you have these types of thoughts and actions. And will encourage others not to vote for you as well. The Sickle Cell Center has and can continue to help many African-American who have this illness. Is this why you are attempting to defund it? How do you sleep at night?!!!caron williams,

the sickle cell clinic at UIC means so much to everyone and mostly to the sickle cell patients and parents. If the kids have no place to get the care that they really need then where will they go to get the care? It is already hard to deal with having sickle cell disease and all the pain crisis that people with sickle cell go through. it is a very hard life to deal with and all we want is a doctor that understands and that can care for us, in the best possible way that they can. So thing long and hard about all those people in the world struggling with this disease!Renita Darnell,

Govenor Quinn, if you know anything about pain you would not allow this clinic to be closed, if you have eve experience any type of severe arthritus pain, imagine pain 4xas bad. thats what sickle cell feels like i know i have experienced both. you are essential denying sickle cell patients the best chance they have for getting godd pain management that couldultimately keep the out of the hospitals.

Valerie,
I have a friend who tirelessly volunteers, and gives her support to this worthy cause, there are no other centers of its kind in the state of Ilinois and if I'm correct only, one maybe two of it's kid in the United States that address everything from treatment to the person with this illness, to support for the family(this plays a vital part of treating the disease).it's like one stop shopping only it's a medical center, that provides support on every level for families dealing with the diease, and the only one in Ilinois.
Governor Quinn, maybe you did'nt know this, and so, I am asking that you please reconsider and not close the center, people are sent to or referred to the center by doctors, when they are limited in knowledge or resources etc for Sickle Cell care, I'm referring to good quality treatment for sickle cell Anemia.
Governor Quinn would you keep the center open,
Thank youLaShare McLemore,

I am the mother of a 20 year old son with Sickle Cell Disease/type SS. He has been very blessed in his 20 years of life and has only had 1 pain crisis in the past 7 years due to the success of his current treatment modality. He is a Senior at Morehouse College in Atlanta Georgia and is monitored at the Grady Hospital's Sickle Cell Center, which the center at UIC is modeled after. The UIC Sickle Cell Center, and it's most professional and caring staff, is a Godsend and is vital to the progress, success and wholistic well-being of patients with Sickle Cell disease as well as continued research and awareness of the findings. Please save this center by any means necessary.xxxxxxxx,

Dear Sir:
I am a Sickle Cell Anemia patient formerly treated at UIC. It is shameful and appalling that an action, such as, to eliminate funding for the UIC Sickle Cell Anemia has even been thought about.
Is it safe to question that if this debilitating disease were to affect a majority population, that is, the caucasian community, that this would NEVER be brought to fruition??
In my opinion, this is just another ply to defy and degrade part of our human race that GOD created!! Shame on you!
Sincerely,
Victoria Grist

I will foward this on in 2003 I lost a loved one to the same and I feel this funding should never be stop. Please help, I know about this disease frist hand and this center is extremely important and needed. My very dear friend pass away some time ago because of this disease, maybe he would still be here if the center had been in operation during his life time.xxxxxxxx,
Please don't stop the funding (assistants)! It's very much helpful and much needed.Yvette,

As the interim Director of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Illinois I speak on behalf of our constituents. Please refund the UIC program. Our community organization SCDAI is also in grave danger of closing. We are still in operation because of faithful volunteers. Sickle Cell patients and their families need our voices and financial support. Please don't let us down.xxxxxxxx,
As a high risk obstetrician I know the stellar work that the Sickle Cell Center at UIC has done for its patients for many years. I have cared for many pregnant sickle patients and it would be very difficult to do so without the expertise of those in the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center. I would urge Mr. Quinn to cut the waste and ridiculous expenditures of the politicians and reinstate the funding for much needed programs, with the Sickle Cell Center at the top of the list.Emily Jones,

Our organization partners with March of Dimes as they are a major researcher for a cure for Sickle Cell. We are a group that menter to Afro American Teens and stress the importance of finding a cure for this disease. We also realize how importance it is for those who have this disease to have access to medical assistance. Hopefully, you will not elimate a program that is vital to this underserved community.Peggy Lewis LeCompte,
